Imperial couple visit earthquake-stricken islanders on Genkai

FUKUOKA, Japan - Emperor Akihito (2nd R) and Empress Michiko (C) speak to local residents during a visit to the earthquake-stricken Genkai island off Fukuoka Prefecture on Oct. 30. The imperial couple traveled to the island, about 18 kilometers off Fukuoka, by boat and about 450 people -- virtually the entire population of the island -- turned up at the quay to welcome the imperial visitors. An earthquake with its epicenter near the island struck on March 20, 2005, damaging 150 houses on the island, and at one point all the islanders were evacuated to the mainland.

Prudential Life to acquire Aoba Life for about 20 bil. yen

TOKYO, Japan - A shrine and its gate on Miyake Island remain buried under volcanic ashes in a photo taken in March 2004. Miyake village head Sukeyasu Hirano said July 20 that residents of the island will be allowed to return home in February 2005, four and a half years after an evacuation order was issued in September 2000 following volcanic eruptions there.

7 million advance tickets for 2005 Aichi Expo sold

NAGOYA, Japan - Toshio Nakamura, secretary general of the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture, tells reporters in Nagoya on April 7 that the number of advance tickets sold for the exhibition totaled 7.04 million as of the end of March. The tickets, available at a 20% discount, have been on sale since last September, and the number sold makes up 47% of the targeted 15 million visitors.
